African American black power prison gang, street gang, and political organization founded in 1966 by George Jackson, George 'Big Jake' Lewis, and W.L. Nolen at San Quentin State Prison in California. It is ideologically Marxist-Leninist and promotes black power and overthrowing the U.S. government. The group is involved in drug trafficking, burglary, and homicide, and remains active primarily in California and Maryland.
