Colombian far-right paramilitary, drug trafficking, and counterinsurgent organization active from 1997 to 2006. Formed on April 18, 1997, as a coalition of paramilitary groups to combat leftist guerrillas such as FARC-EP and ELN. Responsible for numerous human rights abuses, including massacres, forced displacement, and assassinations. Designated as a terrorist organization by Colombia, the EU, and the US until 2014. Demobilized in 2006, with some members later forming successor criminal groups.
