Islamist militant organization active in North Africa and the Sahel, originating from the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC) which rebranded in 2007. It is an affiliate of al-Qaeda, primarily composed of Algerian and Saharan members, and funds itself largely through kidnapping for ransom. The group has been designated a terrorist organization by numerous countries and international bodies. In 2017, its Sahara branch merged with other groups to form Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin.
